Group Leader in Computational Chemistry


The Chemical Department at the Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification (IOM, Permoserstr. 15, 04318
Leipzig, Germany) aims to fill the position of a Group Leader (male or female) in Computational Chemistry, starting February 1st, 2018, or later.
Excellent and motivated candidates with a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or similar and an excellent and visible track record in Computational Chemistry and Quantum Chemical Modeling are encouraged to apply.

Candidate requirements
The candidate should have extensive experience in the calculation and modeling of molecular and materials science parameters and dynamics of processes relevant to surfaces and interfaces (soft and hard matter interfaces, micro- and nanostructured interfaces; interaction with charged particles, plasmas, and photons with matter). Experience in the development of methods in theory is also highly welcome. The candidate should have a visible track record in successful proposal writing and research money acquisition in individual or larger network proposals. Depending upon the qualification of the applicant, the candidate may also be associated with the Chemistry and Physics Faculties of the University Leipzig through a (honorary or adjunct) professorship. The candidate is expected to build his or her own theory group at the IOM.

Work at the IOM

  • Establish and lead a theory group at the IOM
  • Closely cooperate with other work groups and scientists at the IOM
  • Be a principal investigator in research and development projects
  • Participate in teaching at the Leipzig University
  • Write highly competitive proposals


  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or similar fields
  • internationally visible, with extensive experience in the field of „Computational Chemistry”
  • strong publication record in excellent journals
  • Ability to communicate, write reports and proposals in English and German
  • Conduct independent research and provide leadership to a theory group (to be established)


  • Research experience in international top laboratories (e.g., as grad-student or postdoc)
  • Habilitation

The salary will be within the German TV-L system (Entgeltgruppe 14). The position is initially limited to
three (3) years with the possibility of extension or tenure after evaluation. For exceptionally qualified candidates with a tenured position, the position may be tenured from the start.
