Group Leader in ’Functional Nanomaterials and Thin Films’

The Chemical Department at the Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification (IOM, Permoserstr. 15, 04318
Leipzig, Germany) aims to fill the position of a Group Leader (male or female) in Functional Nanomaterials and Thin Films, starting February 1st, 2018, or later.
Excellent and motivated candidates with a PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or similar and an excellent track record in the field of Functional Nanomaterials and Thin Films are encouraged to apply.

Candidate requirements
The candidate should have extensive experience in the field of ‘functionalized nanomateriels and thin
films’, synthesis and characterization of functionalized nanomaterials and thin films, and spectroscopic
methods development based upon lasers and spectroscopy. At the IOM a special focus is on diamond
materials as probes or quantum sensors, and experience in this field would be beneficial. The candidate
should have a visible track record in successful proposal writing and research money acquisition in individual or larger network proposals. Depending upon the qualification of the applicant, the candidate may also be associated with the Chemistry and Physics Faculties of the University Leipzig through a (honorary or adjunct) professorship. Using existing infrastructure such as laser and analytical facilities, the candidate is expected to build his or her own group at the IOM.

Work at the IOM

  • Establish and lead a group on Functional Nanomaterials and Thin Films at the IOM
  • Closely cooperate with other work groups and scientists at the IOM
  • Be a principal investigator in research and development projects
  • Participate in teaching at the University Leipzig
  • Write highly competitive proposals

Qualifications
essential

  • PhD in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science or similar fields
  • internationally visible, with extensive experience in the field of ‘Functional Nanomaterials and Thin Films’
  • strong publication record in excellent journals
  • Ability to communicate, write reports and proposals in English and German
  • Conduct independent research and provide leadership to a group (to be established)

  • Research experience in international top laboratories (e.g., as grad-student or postdoc)
  • Habilitation

Salary
The salary will be within the german TV-L system (Entgeltgruppe 14). The position is initially limited to
three (3) years with the possibility of extension or tenure after evaluation. For exceptionally qualified candidates with a tenured position, the position may be tenured from the start.
