Overview
The Leibniz Institute of Surface Modification was founded in January 1992 by recommendation of the German Science Council. The institute works on basic and applied research on the interaction of radiation with matter and their technological applications.
The Institute is
a member of the Leibniz Association and is financed in equal parts by the Federal Republic of Germany and the Federal States.
The institute closely collaborates with the University of Leipzig, the Max Planck Institute for
Mathematics in the Sciences und der Leipzig University of Applied Science. There are cooperations with many further universities, research institutes and companies in Germany and abroad.
The IOM has about 140 employees with about 70 scientific staff members (including guests and PhD students). About 2/3 of the members are funded by third-party funds.
The IOM is located at the Science Park Leipzig.
