Trends in energy and particle beam ultra-precision optical surface engineering

Date: 28 August - 01 September 2017 at IOM, Leipzig, Germany


Modern optical surfaces for high-end applications such as semiconductor lithography, laser, synchrotron radiation, telescopes or space-based systems require utmost accuracy over the entire spatial wavelength range. At the same time, the large variety of complex surface shapes/forms demand for highly deterministic machining processes.

Ion beam, plasma and laser related manufacturing methods provide unique features for ultra-precision surface engineering on the atomic height scale. The application of these emerging technologies for optical surface fabrication allows to target surface features on the sub-nanometer scale. An interdisciplinary approach to the plasma and ion related technologies makes this summer school an outstanding event for students of natural science and engineering.

Target Group

We welcome applications from those engaged in natural sciences and engineering research. There will be 50 places available for German and international students and PhD students. The school will be conducted in English language. It will feature strong interactive elements and the opportunity for attendees to network with our speakers, thus a good standard  of comprehension and of spoken English is essential.

An attendee fee of 75 € is kindly requested.


The summer school will cover the following topics:

-          Ion beam based technologies for ultra-precision optics manufacturing

-          Plasma jet technology for ultra-precision surface machining

-          Laser ultra-precision optical surface processing

-          Methods of ultra-precision  surface measurement I production environment

-          Modern trends in optical grinding and polishing

The program comprises 90 min lectures by expert speakers from academia and industry (from Japan, Switzerland, Germany) and practical courses on surface measurement and deterministic fabrication of optical elements and a social event.

Registration is open until June 30, 2017. Successful applicants will be notified by email. All attendees are expected to give an oral presentation on their PhD project and therefore are asked to submit a short abstract of their PhD research together with their registration.
