Project description:

The Leibniz-Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM), Permoserstr.15, in Leipzig, invites applications for a Ph.D. project on “Plasma assisted synthesis of functional nanoparticles and porous materials - experiments and modeling” within the new-founded IOM graduate school. The position will be filled for 3 years.

Aims of the project:

Metallic and oxide nanoparticles bear an enormous potential for applications in numerous fields and constitute a suitable basis for synthesis of novel materials. Employing a plasma-assisted inert gas condensation approach, such particles can be synthesized with highly tunable sizes, shapes, core-shell structure and functionalization. While interesting on their own, subsequent deposition on sub­strates results on highly porous films of novel properties. Yet, the physics underlying formation of phase, shape and structure is still insufficiently understood. The present project aims to clarify these aspects using systematic experiments and atomistic computer simulations (Molecular Dynamics and Monte-Carlo simulations).

Beyond project work, active participation within the graduate school and involvement in routine activi­ties of the group are expected.

Your profile:

Outstanding candidates with a strong background in physics, materials science, chemistry or related disciplines are encouraged to apply. A completed M.Sc. / Diploma degree, as well as fluency in English are prerequisite. A background in the fields of computer modeling of materials and / or programming skills as well as proficiency with a scientific unix computing environment are advan­tageous.
