Research assistant with the possibility of pursuing a doctoral degree (m/f/d)

The Leibniz Institute for Surface Engineering (IOM) in Leipzig is seeking to fill the following position for a limited period of 36 months from 01.08.2025:

Research assistant with the possibility of pursuing a doctoral degree (m/f/d)

The Leibniz Institute for Surface Engineering (IOM) is researching new functional and precision surfaces for applications of high societal relevance and emerging technologies. One key focus of IOM is on fundamental physical and chemical processes using ions, electrons, plasmas and photons. We are part of the Leibniz Association, one of the four major non-university science organizations with 96 institutes in Germany.

The work is carried out within the framework of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie doctoral training network PhotoBrane ("Photo-tuning membranes for molecular separation") within the framework of Horizon Europe. PhotoBrane is at the forefront of innovation, developing next-generation phototunable and photoregenerable membranes. These breakthrough membranes can transform industries such as energy conversion, biomedical applications, water treatment, and environmental protection by improving selectivity, permeability, and operational longevity. The proposed project " Spectroscopic characterization of switching mechanisms and transient membrane properties" deals with the optical spectroscopic characterization of polymer membranes, their macroscopic properties and the molecular switching behavior underlying light-control of the membrane properties.

We offer you:

  • An exciting role with diverse activities in an interdisciplinary working environment, along with the possibility of pursuing a doctorate
  • Research activity for 36 months
  • Attractive salary plus allowances package according to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie/ Innovative Training Networks rules
  • Flexible working hours (40 hours/week)
  • A wide range of offerings to support work-life balance

Your tasks:

  • Spectroscopic characterization of molecular photoswitches in polymer membranes
  • Investigation of (transient) wetting behavior of photoactive polymer membranes
  • Studies on molecular transport properties in membranes
  • Cooperation with European partner institutions, including in the context of research trips

Our requirements:

  • Completed Master's degree in chemistry or physics
  • Previous knowledge in optical spectroscopy and / or polymer chemistry
  • Interest to work in an international and interdisciplinary team
  • At the time of recruitment, you have not resided in Germany for more than 12 months in the last 3 years or have carried out your main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Germany
  • Willingness to integrate into an interdisciplinary and international research group
  • Goal-oriented way of working and pragmatic attitude as well as high ability to work in a team
  • Secure IT user skills
