The statutory bodies of the association are the General Assembly, the Board of Trustees, the Executive Board and the Scientific Advisory Board.
The research and development work at the IOM is carried out in four research areas (FB) and an incubator "Explorative Projects".
The work of the four research areas and the incubator is supported by four cross-sectional units (Q).
Institute Management
The Executive Board manages the Institute as Director and represents it in all Institute matters. It bears responsibility for the overall management of the Institute. The Executive Board also reports to the Board of Trustees and is advised by the Scientific Advisory Board. Internally, the Executive Board is advised by the Scientific and Technical Council (WTR).

The works council represents the interests of employees and can negotiate with the employer on their behalf. To this end, it has rights that are set out in the Works Constitution Act (BetrVG). One of the most important tasks of the works council is to ensure that standards and regulations are adhered to at the IOM. The term of office of the Works Council is four years. The size of the Works Council depends on the number of employees entitled to vote.

There are two ombudspersons at the IOM who serve as contact persons for the institute's staff in questions of good scientific practice and suspected scientific misconduct. They hold an elective office and are elected by the staff every 4 years. Ombudspersons may not be members of the Executive Board. The ombudspersons stand for an impartial approach to disputes, taking into account the interests of staff members. This includes doctoral candidates, students, trainees and pupils at the IOM as well as visiting researchers and former staff members.
