Research Scientist (m/f/d)

The Leibniz Institute for Surface Engineering (IOM) is researching new functional and precision surfaces for applications of high societal relevance and emerging technologies. One key focus of IOM is on fundamental physical and chemical processes using ions, electrons, plasmas and photons. We are part of the Leibniz Association, one of the four major non-university science organizations with 96 institutes in Germany. To strengthen our team, we are looking for a qualified and open-minded individual to join us at the earliest possible date. We offer a part-time position (26,7 hours per week) for a fixed term from November 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027.

  • A wide range of offerings to support work-life balance
  • Assistance in securing a place at a kindergarten, free parking spaces, and capital-forming benefits

Your tasks:

  • Targeted generation of defects in oxides and semiconductors by electron irradiation
  • Planning and conducting systematic electron irradiation experiments
  • Investigation of the influence of process parameters, such as electron energy and irradiation dose, on the resulting material modifications
  • Investigation of the effects of generated defect structures on the optical and photonic properties of the materials
  • Characterization of optically active defect centers using fluorescence spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM)
  • Correlation of irradiation parameters with defect structure, surface properties, and structural and photonic material properties
  • Documentation and presentation of research results and collaboration with interdisciplinary project partners

Our requirements:

  • Successfully completed Master’s degree or equivalent experience in Chemistry, Materials Science, Nanoscience, or a comparable field in the natural sciences
  • Sound knowledge of inorganic chemistry, solid-state chemistry, and/or materials chemistry
  • Practical experience in the synthesis and characterization of inorganic solids or functional materials
  • Knowledge of electron microscopy (SEM/TEM) is an advantage
  • Knowledge of fluorescence spectroscopy, microscopy, FLIM, photonics, or optical material characterization is desirable
  • Knowledge of defect chemistry, oxides, or semiconductor materials is an advantage
