Leipzig is hosting the UEFA EURO 2024, and to get in the mood for the tournament and promote scientific cooperation in our city, the City of Leipzig's Knowledge Policy Department and the Leipzig Science Network (LSN) organised the 1st Leipzig Science Cup on 22 May 2024. All Leipzig science institutions had the opportunity to nominate their own teams for this football tournament. A total of 18 teams took part.
Under the name "Leipzig Science Park goes green", the Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM) and the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) put together a joint football team and competed against numerous strong teams from Leipzig's science institutions. Unfortunately, it was not enough for a place. But with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat, the team came 3rd in a group of 5 teams and only just missed out on the final round.
Nevertheless, everyone had a lot of fun kicking a ball around together and it motivated the employees of Leipzig Science Park to take part in further joint activities.
