IOM PhD Researcher Recognized as Part of Best Team at EMS Summer School

Md Abdur Rahman, PhD researcher and research associate in the IOM research department “Surfaces of Porous Membrane Filters”, took part in the 41st EMS Summer School “Membrane Technologies for Water Treatment: From Fundamentals and Lab Practice to Full-Scale Implementation” at the University of Girona, Spain, from August 31 to September 4, 2026. Together with his team AQUA SALMS, he was selected as the “Best Group”.

Organized by the European Membrane Society (EMS), the Summer School brought together early-career researchers and professionals from the field of membrane technology. The programme combined scientific fundamentals with practical laboratory work and insights into the transfer of membrane processes from laboratory to full-scale applications. Topics included microfiltration, ultrafiltration and reverse osmosis, as well as current challenges in water treatment.

As part of a group project, the AQUA SALMS team addressed the treatment of landfill leachate water with the aim of enabling safe discharge into rivers. The task combined aspects of membrane technology, process engineering and water treatment and required the joint development of an application-oriented solution.

The results of the group projects were presented at the University of Girona on September 4, marking the conclusion of the Summer School. The AQUA SALMS team impressed with its concept and was selected as the best group of the Summer School.

The IOM warmly congratulates Md Abdur Rahman and the entire AQUA SALMS team on this achievement.
