The German Research Foundation (DFG) will fund the University of Leipzig's Research Training Group "Hydrogen Isotopes: 1,2,3H" with 5.4 million euros over at least four and a half years starting in October. The approved funding will enable up to 30 doctoral students to pursue their doctorates in a convergent approach, i.e., in an environment that promotes thinking outside the box. The Research Training Group combines the expertise of the university, the Helmholz Center Dresden-Rossendorf and the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification Leipzig in the fields of laser spectroscopy, materials science, lab-on-a-chip technology, organic synthesis and radiochemistry. With a tailored qualification program consisting of courses, forums and activities, the PhD students are individually supported. In addition to focused lectures on the multifaceted properties of hydrogen isotopes and specific training in radiochemistry, courses on the key skills of "good research practice" and, for the first time, "research data management" are offered. The interdisciplinary research program spanning the natural sciences relies on international cooperation and exchange. For example, several DFG-funded Mercator visiting professors from South Korea, the USA and Great Britain, among others, will be working in the Research Training Group on site. All doctoral students will also have the opportunity to spend several months conducting research with cooperation partners abroad, in particular to foster their curiosity and scientific independence.
