Last Friday, June 20, 2025, we opened our doors to curious visitors. Under the motto “Discover. Marvel. Understand,” interested parties had the opportunity to gain exciting insights into current research topics during three guided tours between 6:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. We were particularly pleased to welcome Vicky Felthaus, Leipzig's mayor for youth, schools, and democracy, and to engage in a constructive exchange with her.
Visitors enjoyed a varied program that offered fascinating insights into the world of science and the application of research. The first tour focused on the question “How do ion engines work – and what does an ion beam have to do with rainbows?” Our researchers presented the technology behind ion beam systems and their application in space travel and surface treatment in a clear and concise manner. During the second tour, visitors were able to experience live how microcontaminants are removed from water or how solar cells are protected by coatings. Visitors were able to see how membrane filters are manufactured and how innovative coating technologies contribute to sustainable energy production.
Tour 3 focused on the world of microscopy: Using state-of-the-art techniques such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM), structures in the nanometer range were made visible – from cell components to the finest details of insects.
Whether technology enthusiasts, young explorers, or simply curious visitors, the evening offered all attendees exciting insights and accessible science they could touch and feel.
We look back on a successful evening and are already looking forward to the next Long Night of Science!
