As part of the EFRE Validation Funding Program 2021–2027, the project “PlasBar – Atmospheric-Pressure Plasmas for the Production of Functional Gas Barrier Coatings for the Energy Sector” is being funded at the Leibniz Institute for Surface Modification (IOM) in Leipzig, thereby investing in research and development activities. The project began as a feasibility study (No. 100737946, 11/2024–04/2025) and has been continuing as a validation project (No. 100781609) since 02/2026.
The goal is to test the performance of a plasma conversion technology developed at the IOM under industry-relevant conditions in roll-to-roll mode. The focus is on energy-efficient atmospheric-pressure plasma processes for producing thin coatings on flexible films for applications in the future energy sector, particularly in photovoltaics and hydrogen utilization. The findings are intended to demonstrate the technology’s applicability and contribute to the development of initial demonstrators. The project thus contributes to increasing resource efficiency in the coating industry.
