On yesterday's Girls'Day, the Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM) once again opened its doors to curious female students, offering them not only insights into practical work but also the opportunity to exchange ideas with successful female role models and to be inspired.

The day began with an introduction to the work of the IOM, during which the visitors learned more about the IOM and its various research areas, as well as the diverse career opportunities. Afterwards, the visitors went on an excursion to the research workshop, a typical chemistry laboratory and other selected laboratories of the institute. Our experts on site provided practical demonstrations of how membranes are modified and used for water purification and how ultra-thin layers are applied to foils. They also provided insights into a high-tech ion beam system for processing wafer surfaces and into the smallest structures under the light microscope and the scanning electron microscope (SEM). During the tour, there was also an opportunity to talk to the institute's scientists, technicians and laboratory assistants. They talked about their own careers and showed how exciting and varied the day-to-day work in research and development is. They particularly emphasized the importance of developing an interest in scientific and technical topics at an early stage and having the courage to take unusual paths. The day ended with the launch of a water rocket in the outdoor area.

It is important to us to show young girls how exciting and diverse science and technology can be. Girls'Day gives us the opportunity to make these industries of the future more tangible for girls and to encourage them to pursue a career in these fields.

About Girls'Day
Girls'Day is the largest career orientation event for girls in Germany and takes place every year. The goal is to spark girls' interest in technical, scientific, skilled crafts and IT occupations and to show them that these occupations are just as diverse and exciting as the traditional female occupations.
