The IOM doctoral students went on a study trip to the Center for Scalable Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence (ScaDS.AI) in Dresden last week, on 24 January 2024. The contact was made during the AI Winter School at the IOM, at this point a big thanks you to Dr. Martin Rudolph. The full-day excursion was initiated by the representatives of the young scientists as part of the Structured Doctoral Training Program of the IOM.
Research work focusing on machine learning and neural networks was presented in the ScaDS.AI Living Lab at the Faculty of Computer Science at TU Dresden. It was also made clear how fruitful the synthesis of the AI methodological expertise of ScaDS.AI and the technical expertise of the project partners from fields such as biology, chemistry and physics can be. Among other things, the ScaDS.AI Graduate School in Dresden and Leipzig, which is open to interested IOM doctoral students, was presented.
Another highlight of the study trip was the one-hour guided tour of the high-performance computing complex Lehmann Center (LZR). This gave the participants an insight into High Performance Computing (HPC) technology, which is used for the development and application of AI solutions, among other things. Here, an innovative and ecologically sustainable approach to component cooling is pursued. Components are cooled directly with water and the waste heat is used to heat other buildings. Special thanks go to Dr. Siavash Ghiasvand of ScaDS.AI for the organization.
