The G6, an alliance of Europe's six leading multidisciplinary research organizations – including the Leibniz Association – recently published a position paper on the EU's strategic direction in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in science.
The paper outlines key areas for action and concrete measures that the EU can take to secure and expand its leading role in responsible AI research and application – from strengthening basic research and building open infrastructures to establishing common ethical frameworks and sustainability standards.
As a member of the Leibniz Association, the IOM is actively involved in the Leibniz Research Network “Mathematical Modeling and Simulation,” which promotes the development of AI skills through practical educational formats such as the Leibniz AI Schools, thereby contributing to the goals of the G6.
The decentralized structure of the Leibniz Association allows AI to be applied specifically to subject-specific issues – for example, in digital materials research, data science infrastructures, AI knowledge graphs, or medical imaging. This diversity is a decisive lever for excellent, responsible, and interdisciplinary AI research in Europe.
