New AI Infrastructure Strengthens Digital Surface Engineering at IOM

The Leibniz Association is strategically expanding its research infrastructure in the field of artificial intelligence. As part of the 1,000 Minds Plus Programme, the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR) is funding three projects with a total volume of around €14.9 million. IOM is part of the consortium for materials science and process engineering, which is coordinated by the Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS).

The consortium will receive almost €5 million in federal funding. The aim is to establish a high-performance infrastructure for the development and application of modern AI methods. The focus is on data-intensive and interdisciplinary research approaches that are relevant to key technologies of Germany’s High-Tech Agenda, including microelectronics, quantum technologies, nuclear fusion, climate-neutral energy technologies and mobility.

For IOM, the funding is also an important building block for its further strategic development. In particular, it strengthens the expansion of the cross-sectional unit “Modelling and Simulation” and thereby supports the Strategic Expansion “Digital Surface Engineering”. At the same time, the project creates new opportunities for collaboration with other Leibniz institutes in the field of artificial intelligence and builds on existing activities such as the AI School of the Leibniz Research Network “Mathematical Modelling and Simulation”.
