Saxony pools expertise for nuclear fusion – IOM part of the new SAXFUSION network

The Leibniz Institute of Surface Engineering (IOM) is participating as a research partner in the newly founded Saxon competence network SAXFUSION, which is funded by the European Union and the Free State of Saxony with around 2.4 million euros. The aim of the network is to strengthen fusion research in Saxony, pool technological expertise, and create new impetus for industry and society.

Coordinated by the Helmholtz Center Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and co-managed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology IWS, SAXFUSION brings together leading Saxon research institutions. The IOM contributes its expertise in the field of “Ultra-precision surfaces” – particularly in surface treatment, precision optics, and the shaping and smoothing of optical components – key technologies for future fusion reactors.

The network links up with national and international fusion initiatives, including ITER, Wendelstein-7X, and major European research facilities, thereby helping to position Saxony as an important location for the development of fusion energy.
