On September 2, 2026, participants of the SAXFUSION Summer School visited IOM in Leipzig. The focus was on technologies for nanometre-precision shaping and structuring for applications in optics, photonics and microelectronics.
Following an introduction to IOM’s research activities, the guests gained insights into ion-beam-assisted structuring and smoothing as well as laser-based precision processing of optical surfaces.
During the subsequent laboratory tour, the participants explored selected research facilities at the institute. These included the RISQ-DIAP diagnostic platform for reactive ion beam processes, the technical facility for plasma and ion beam processing, and the laser technology facility. Current research approaches and technological processes for the high-precision processing and modification of surfaces were presented.
The visit concluded with an exchange on the technologies presented and possible links to fusion research.
Earlier that day, the participants had also visited the Laser Institute at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences. Together, the two stops illustrated how different areas of expertise complement one another, from the high-resolution analysis of the smallest structures to their targeted processing at the nanometre scale.
The SAXFUSION Summer School brings together early-career researchers and partners from the network, providing insights into research approaches and technologies for future applications in the field of nuclear fusion.
