How does an experiment work best and are the results always the same? Interested students were able to explore these and other questions at the IOM during the “Week of Open Companies” “SCHAU REIN!”. This year, from March 17 to 18, the IOM participated for the first time in Saxony's largest initiative for career orientation to provide information about career opportunities. A total of 17 interested students and a practice consultant took the opportunity to learn more about the professions of chemical and physics laboratory technician at IOM. Divided into several groups, the students were able to take part in various activities in different laboratories to gain practical experience in scientific work, exchange ideas with experts and get to know the working environment better. For example, they learned how rheological investigations are carried out to obtain information about the processability or flow properties of pasty samples, or how the wettability of natural and modified surfaces is determined by contact angle measurements. The young people were also able to try out the titration of self-prepared solutions to determine concentrations. They were also allowed to try their hand at soldering and building an electric circuit. The visit to the IOM was interspersed with a knowledge quiz during the tour, in which what had been learned could be tested.
