A new approach for the preparation of polymer membranes based on recycling PET from one-way bottles was developed at the IOM (Department Surfaces of Porous Membrane Filters). Because of the low material costs and good availability, the membranes can be prepared in a cost-efficient (up to 95% cost reduction) and ecofriendly way. Possible applications are wastewater purification or preparation of drinking water. Due to the combination of this technology with the electron beam-based membrane modification process established at the IOM, the resulting membranes will have an enhanced performance. Recently, a funded project was granted to the IOM (funding programm “Validierungsförderung” by the „Sächsische Staatsministerium für Wirtschaft, Arbeit und Verkehr (SMWA)“) to validate the possibility of a technology transfer (project duration 06/21-11/22). The project will be assisted by local SMEs and accompanied by futureSAX, the innovation platform of the free state of Saxony.
