On November 4, 2025, two worlds that at first glance appear to have little in common came together at the IOM in Leipzig: state-of-the-art plasma technology and centuries-old book art. A delegation from the National Library of the Czech Republic in Prague visited the institute to discuss current research findings and explore opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

Petra Vavrová's team is currently working on a national research project dedicated to the use of plasma for the treatment and conservation of sensitive library holdings – an approach that puts high-tech physics at the service of preserving cultural heritage. Together with the Czech Academy of Sciences and Masaryk University in Brno, the scientists are investigating how plasma processes can gently remove mold, dirt, and signs of aging from valuable historical materials.

The visit to the IOM provided ample opportunity for professional exchange: a series of presentations by the participating research groups was followed by a laboratory tour and a concluding discussion round, which demonstrated how fruitful the dialogue between materials science and restoration research can be.

The IOM was delighted with the stimulating scientific exchange, the opportunity to learn about the conservation work of the Czech National Library, and the prospects for joint research projects.
